Schools and colleges across Jammu & Kashmir and the adjoining border regions are set to reopen from Tuesday, May 13, 2025, after remaining shut for several days due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor. Officials have confirmed that security assessments in sensitive zones indicate a return to normalcy, allowing educational institutions to resume operations.
District administrations in Kupwara, Poonch, Rajouri, and Kathua have issued circulars to all government and private schools, directing them to resume classes from May 13.
Operation Sindoor was launched by India in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. The operation targeted nine terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), aiming to dismantle the infrastructure of groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen—organisations designated as terrorist groups by India and several international bodies.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on Saturday, May 10, 2025, to halt military actions with immediate effect, following four days of intense cross-border drone and missile exchanges.
