Authorities in Varanasi have announced that all schools in the district will remain closed from January 27 to February 5, 2025 due to the influx of devotees travelling to the city during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. The decision was taken to manage the challenges posed by the massive crowds and traffic congestion, ensuring the safety of students and the smooth functioning of the city.
According to the order issued by the District Magistrate, the closure applies to government, aided, CBSE, ICSE, and state board schools offering classes from Grade 1 to 12. However, online classes will continue during regular school hours to ensure academic schedules are not disrupted.
Despite the closure, board practical exams will take place as planned. The directive ensures that there are no interruptions in scheduled examinations. School staff, including teachers, have been asked to attend school during this period to oversee online operations and other academic activities.
The District Basic Education Officer, Arvind Pathak, stated, “Given the current situation in urban areas where a large number of pilgrims and devotees are expected to arrive, schools have been instructed to switch to online learning. Practical exams for CBSE, UP Board, or other boards should be conducted without disruption.”
This year, Mauni Amavasya falls on 29 January, a significant day during the Maha Kumbh Mela. Officials estimate that 5 to 7 lakh devotees are arriving in Varanasi daily, leading to increased crowds and traffic in the city. Parents and students are advised to remain in touch with their respective schools for updates regarding online classes and any other academic schedules.
