The Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Council has released the holiday calendar for August 2025. According to the schedule, schools in the state will remain closed from Thursday, 14 August, to Sunday, 17 August, due to a series of public and national holidays.
On 14 August, Chehlum will be observed across the state, marking the 40th day after Ashura, which commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein in the Battle of Karbala. This day has been declared a public holiday.
The following day, 15 August, will be celebrated as Independence Day, a national holiday across India. Schools will mark the occasion by hoisting the national flag and conducting cultural and patriotic programmes.
On 16 August, Shri Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated, commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna, regarded as the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu in Hinduism. This day will also be a public holiday for schools.
The holiday period will conclude with the weekly Sunday holiday on 17 August.
