The Punjab government has announced summer holidays for all schools in the state from 2 June to 30 June 2025. This decision comes amid a severe heatwave affecting several parts of northern India. All Government, Aided, Recognised, and Private schools in the state will remain closed during this period.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), temperatures in many districts of Punjab, including Bathinda, Patiala, Amritsar, and Firozpur, have crossed 44 degree celsius. Red alerts have been issued for multiple regions, warning of continued extreme weather conditions over the coming days.
Minister Harjot Singh Bains confirmed the announcement on Monday. He said the decision was taken in consultation with the health department, keeping in mind the safety and well-being of schoolchildren. “The current weather conditions pose health risks, especially for young students. We have decided to begin summer vacations early to avoid exposure during school hours,” he said.
Schools across Punjab had already reduced classroom hours earlier this month due to the heat. Morning-only shifts and temporary adjustments in daily schedules were introduced in many areas as a short-term measure. However, with no significant relief in sight, the government opted for a complete closure for the month of June.
Before the holidays begin, schools have been instructed to finish all pending academic work. This includes the distribution of report cards, completion of administrative duties, and any preliminary sessions for the new academic year. All such work must be completed by 1 June.
Schools are expected to reopen on 1 July 2025, but the reopening date could change depending on weather conditions. Officials have stated that the situation will be reviewed in the last week of June, and further guidance will be issued if necessary.
