Sankranti School Holidays 2025: Southern India is gearing up for the vibrant harvest festival of Pongal, and school holidays have been announced in key states to allow students and families to fully celebrate this festival.
In Tamil Nadu, a five-day holiday has been declared from January 14 to 18, 2025, including Pongal and subsequent celebrations. This extended break will facilitate travel for families to their hometowns and enable full participation in the cultural events associated with the festival. To compensate for this extended leave, January 25 will be a working day for all government offices and educational institutions.
Telangana has also announced a festive break for students. Schools will remain closed from January 13 to 17, 2025, providing a seven-day holiday period, inclusive of the weekend. This extended period will allow students and their families to fully enjoy the festivities of Bhogi and Sankranti.
While a statewide holiday for Pongal is not expected in Kerala, several districts bordering Tamil Nadu, such as Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam, are likely to declare local holidays. This decision recognizes the significant cultural influence of Pongal in these regions, where a sizable Tamil-speaking population resides.
Pongal, a harvest festival celebrated with great enthusiasm, involves colorful decorations, traditional food like Pongal (a sweet rice dish), and vibrant cultural performances.
