PM Research Fellowship Scheme: Govt Announces 10,000 Fellowships for Technological Research in IITs and IISc

The government has announced 10,000 fellowships under the PM Research Fellowship Scheme with enhanced financial support.

The government has announced 10,000 fellowships under the PM Research Fellowship Scheme to support technological research at IITs and IISc over the next five years. The announcement was made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Union Budget 2025-26 on Saturday, February 1.

10,000 Fellowships for Technological Research

Under the PM Research Fellowship Scheme, 10,000 fellowships will be provided over the next five years to promote advanced research in technology at premier institutions like IITs and IISc. The Budget also proposes enhanced financial support for these fellowships, aiming to attract and retain top research talent in the country.

Rs 20,000 Crore for R&D and Innovation

In a significant move to boost private sector-driven research, development, and innovation, the Finance Minister announced an allocation of Rs 20,000 crore. This fund is intended to encourage collaboration between the private sector and research institutions, fostering an environment that supports technological advancements and innovation across industries.

Expansion in IITs and Medical Colleges

Apart from the fellowship scheme, the Finance Minister announced the addition of 10,000 medical seats in colleges and hospitals next year, with a total of 75,000 seats to be added over the next five years. The government also plans to expand infrastructure in five IITs established after 2024. Additionally, IIT Patna will receive funding to enhance its hostel and other facilities.

Boost to Start-ups and Scientific Research

The government will also explore a Fund of Funds to support start-ups, ensuring they have access to financial resources for innovation and growth. Furthermore, 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs will be set up in schools over the next five years to encourage scientific thinking among young students.

To enhance digital infrastructure, broadband connectivity will be extended to all government secondary schools and primary healthcare centres, ensuring better access to technology and healthcare services.
