More than 12,000 teaching positions remain unfilled in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) across India, according to the Ministry of Education. This information was presented by Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary during a written response in the Rajya Sabha on July 23, 2025.
Chaudhary highlighted that the vacancies have emerged due to multiple factors, including the establishment of new schools, retirements, resignations, promotions, transfers, and other administrative changes. “Vacancies in teaching posts arise from various reasons such as opening of new schools, retirements, promotions, and transfers,” he stated.
As per the latest data, 7,765 posts in Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and 4,323 in Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) are currently vacant, reflecting a significant shortfall in staffing across these central government educational institutions.
The Minister clarified that the recruitment process to fill these posts is ongoing and is conducted in line with the existing recruitment guidelines. To ensure that academic sessions are not disrupted due to staff shortages, contractual appointments are made temporarily.
Chaudhary also pointed out that other key educational bodies are facing similar staffing issues. The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has 143 Group A academic vacancies, while the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is short of 60 personnel.
Efforts are being made to expedite the recruitment process and address these gaps to maintain the quality and consistency of education across the country.
