1999: The tragic Suai Church Massacre occurred in East Timor

1870: A significant milestone in the fight for women's rights

A Woman Casts Her Vote in the US for the First Time. Louisa Ann Swain made history by voting in state elections in Wyoming. Although women were not granted the right to vote nationwide in the US until 1920, Wyoming's governor, John A. Campbell, had signed a bill on December 13, 1869, allowing women to vote in local and state elections.

1522: Victoria Becomes the First Ship to Circumnavigate the World.

Commanded by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the Spanish ship set sail from Spain on September 20, 1519, in search of a better route to Indonesia. Although Magellan himself did not survive the voyage, Victoria and its remaining crew of 18 men returned to Seville, Spain, completing the first successful circumnavigation of the globe.
