1973: OPEC Declares Oil Embargo


OPEC, led by Arab nations, declared an oil embargo on countries backing Israel during the Yom Kippur War. The move caused a significant oil shortage, with long-lasting economic impacts across the US and Europe. The embargo was lifted in March 1974, but its effects lingered for years.

1956: Bobby Fischer Wins 'Game of the Century'


A 13-year-old Bobby Fischer triumphed over Donald Byrne in a legendary chess match. Dubbed the 'Game of the Century,' it took place at New York's Marshall Chess Club. Fischer's brilliance cemented his status as a rising star in the chess world.

1861: Cullin-la-Ringo Massacre in Australia


The Cullin-la-Ringo massacre became one of the deadliest conflicts between settlers and Aboriginal Australians. A group led by politician Horatio Wills camped in Queensland, leading to a violent clash. Nineteen settlers were killed in what is seen as the largest attack on white settlers by Aboriginals.

1814: London Beer Flood Claims Lives


An unusual disaster struck London when vats of beer burst at the Meux and Company Brewery. More than 610,000 litres of beer flooded city streets, creating a 15-foot wave. Eight people died, some attending a funeral when the beer flood hit.
