Historical Overview: August 8

8888 Uprising in Myanmar Begins (1988)

On August 8, 1988, Yangon, the capital of Myanmar, became the center of the 8888 Uprising. This pro-democracy movement, started by students, opposed the one-party rule of General Ne Win. Hundreds of thousands of protesters joined in, calling for political reform. Unfortunately, the government responded with violent repression. The protests continued for over a month until a military coup, led by the State Peace and Development Council, established a military junta. The movement is known as the 8888 Uprising because it began on August 8, 1988.

Nixon Announces His Resignation (1974)

On August 8, 1974, Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, announced his resignation due to the Watergate Scandal. The scandal involved his administration's cover-up of a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate Complex. As the scandal came to light, Congress began impeachment proceedings against Nixon. His resignation, effective on August 9, made him the first U.S. president to resign while in office.

ASEAN is Founded (1967)

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was founded on August 8, 1967, by leaders from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. They created ASEAN to boost regional peace, stability, and economic growth, signing the Bangkok Declaration to establish its foundation. Today, ASEAN has grown to include 10 member countries.

Wright Brothers Publicly Showcase Their Flying Machine (1908)

On August 8, 1908, the Wright Brothers, pioneers of human flight, gave their first public demonstration of their flying machine. The event happened at a racecourse in Le Mans, France, five years after their first flight in 1903. Wilbur Wright piloted the aircraft for just 1 minute and 45 seconds, but the crowd was amazed, and skeptics were silenced. This demonstration was a major milestone in aviation history.
