In response to the severe heatwave conditions gripping the state, the Odisha government has declared early summer vacations for all government and private schools and colleges, effective immediately. The decision, announced on Tuesday, aims to protect students from the scorching temperatures that have disrupted daily life across Odisha.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi chaired a high-level review meeting and emphasized the need to prioritize children’s health during the extreme weather conditions. Following his directive, all educational institutions—from anganwadi centers and pre-schools to Class XII—will remain closed starting April 23 until further notice.
Additionally, the state government has instructed authorities to ensure the delivery of dry rations to anganwadi students during the closure period. While scheduled examinations will proceed as planned, colleges (both government and private) will also remain shut until further orders.
Over the past three days, Odisha has experienced a sharp spike in temperatures, with several regions recording highs above 44°C. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Jharsuguda was the hottest at 46.2°C—the highest this season. Other severely affected areas included:
- Hirakud: 44.7°C
- Sambalpur: 44.6°C
- Boudh: 44.5°C
- Titilagarh: 44°C
Bhubaneswar recorded a comparatively lower temperature of 36.7°C, but the heat index made conditions unbearable.
