We often hear that honesty is the best policy. But what happens when your honesty becomes a problem for others? For IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe, this isn't a philosophical question but the story of his career.
In a recent move by the Maharashtra government, five bureaucrats were reshuffled. Among them was Tukaram Mundhe, a 2005-batch IAS officer. He was moved from his post as Development Commissioner in Mumbai to become the Secretary of the Divyang Kalyan Department. For most, this would be a routine transfer. For Mundhe, it was the 23rd time in just 19 years of service.
To put that in perspective, most IAS officers get to serve in a posting for at least two to three years. Mundhe, on the other hand, has rarely had that luxury. His postings have been changed in quick succession, making him one of the most frequently transferred officers in the country, drawing comparisons to the well-known Haryana officer Ashok Khemka.
So, why does this keep happening?
The answer lies in Mundhe's reputation. Coming from a small village in Maharashtra's Beed district, he is known as a sharp, honest and no-nonsense officer. He first made headlines during his very first posting in Solapur, where he conducted raids on illegal liquor dens. He later took on the sand mafia, cracked down on corruption and earned a name for himself as a strict disciplinarian.
While the public often appreciated his work style, his approach didn't always sit well with everyone. His commitment to the rules frequently led to clashes with politicians and discomfort among staff, which many believe is the real reason behind his constant transfers.

But Mundhe's story isn't just about transfers. It's about being resilient. Despite all the hurdles, he has consistently performed his duty. His work has earned him awards like the 'Best Collector' and even the title 'Waterman of Maharashtra'.
Tukaram Mundhe stands as a quiet symbol of integrity, a reminder that some officers would rather be transferred than compromise on what’s right.
