Maharashtra Schools Closed on August 20: Amid a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, schools and colleges in several parts of Maharashtra will remain closed on Wednesday, 20 August 2025.

Authorities have ordered the closure of all schools, colleges, training centres and anganwadis in Thane, Panvel, Navi Mumbai and Lonavala for the day. The move comes after continuous heavy rainfall disrupted normal life in many districts, with waterlogging and flood like conditions reported in several low lying areas.

Mumbai Schools to Remain Open

In Mumbai, schools and colleges will function as usual. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clarified that it has not declared any holiday for educational institutions in the city, even though an orange alert is in place for the region.

Weather Situation Across Maharashtra

While Mumbai is on orange alert, neighbouring Raigad district has been placed under a red alert. The IMD has also forecast heavy showers in parts of Thane and Palghar. Flight operations at Mumbai airport are expected to face delays, and local train services may also be affected due to the weather conditions. Commuters have been asked to plan their journeys carefully.

Meteorologists have linked the intense rainfall to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal combined with strengthening monsoon winds.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a review meeting with the disaster management department to assess the situation. He stated that the next 48 hours would be crucial for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, which are under different levels of weather alerts.
