GATE 2026 Registration: IIT Guwahati to conduct exam; key dates released

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) will be the organising institute for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026. The official website for the examination, gate2026.iitg.ac.in, has been launched, providing essential details for aspiring candidates.

The GATE 2026 examination will be conducted on February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026. The registration process will commence on August 25, 2025, with the deadline for submissions set for September 25, 2025 (without late fees) and October 6, 2025 (with late fees).

GATE 2026 will feature 30 test papers, allowing candidates to appear for one or two papers. Those opting for two papers must select from predefined combinations. Notably, only a single application form is required, even if a candidate chooses two test papers.

The examination will be conducted in English and will consist entirely of objective-type questions, including:

Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) – Only one correct answer out of four options.

Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) – One or more correct answers out of four.

Numerational Answer Type (NAT) Questions – Answers must be entered using a virtual keypad.

A valid GATE score is crucial for admission to:

• Master's programmes and direct doctoral programmes in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, and humanities.
• Doctoral programmes in relevant disciplines at the Ministry of Education (MoE)-supported institutions and other government-funded organisations.

GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and all IITs, under the National Coordination Board (NCB), Department of Higher Education, Government of India.

In 2025, the exam was administered by IIT Roorkee, held between February 1 and 16, with results declared on March 19, 2025.
