In a bid to strengthen vocational education, the Directorate of Education has approved the addition of Skill and NSQF subjects in 257 more government schools across Delhi, starting from the current academic year, officials confirmed.
The move comes under the Samagra Shiksha initiative and aims to equip students with practical, job-oriented skills alongside their regular academic curriculum. As per a circular issued on May 23, students from Classes 9 and 11 will now have the opportunity to enroll in various skill-based subjects, with each school expected to accommodate up to 50 students per subject.
To help students make informed decisions, schools have been directed to conduct counselling sessions explaining the scope and career potential of the skill courses being offered. The circular also clarifies that new admissions in Class 11 will be accepted even if students haven’t taken the subject previously in Class 9 or 10.
Highlighting a more adaptable education model, the circular noted that this is part of a flexible, multi-entry and multi-exit framework, making vocational education more inclusive. However, it is not mandatory for all students to opt for skill subjects—schools can offer them as an optional stream.
As per CBSE regulations, schools do not need separate approvals to introduce these subjects. They simply need to update the relevant information on the CBSE portal.
Courses offered under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) include practical disciplines like Information Technology, Retail, Healthcare, and Beauty & Wellness—subjects designed to boost students' employability and prepare them for real-world careers.
