The Supreme Court of India will hear petitions filed by the Consortium of National Law Universities (CNLU) today, seeking to transfer cases related to the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2025 results. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar will preside over the matter.
The petitions aim to consolidate cases challenging the CLAT 2025 results, which are currently pending in multiple High Courts, including Delhi, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Bombay, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab and Haryana. The CNLU has requested that these cases be transferred to the apex court to ensure uniformity in the resolution process.
The CLAT 2025 exam was conducted on 1 December 2024, and the results were declared on 7 December 2024. However, shortly after the announcement, legal disputes arose regarding certain questions in the exam. On 20 December 2024, the Delhi High Court directed the CNLU to revise the results in favour of a candidate, citing errors in questions 14 and 100. The court observed that these errors were “demonstrably clear” and stated that ignoring them would be unfair to the petitioner.
In response, the CNLU asserted that the CLAT 2025 final answer key had been prepared after thorough evaluation by experts. The Consortium announced on its official website on 24 December 2024 that it would challenge the Delhi High Court’s ruling in the Supreme Court.
Due to the ongoing legal challenges, the CNLU has postponed the CLAT 2025 counselling process. Originally, the first admission list for National Law Universities (NLUs) was scheduled to be released on 26 December 2024. However, the Consortium issued an official notice stating that the release of the admission list and subsequent counselling activities would be delayed. A revised schedule will be announced after the Supreme Court delivers its decision.
The hearing in the Supreme Court today is expected to determine whether the cases will be transferred and how the pending disputes over the CLAT 2025 results will be addressed.
