Every year, India celebrates Children’s Day on 14 November to mark the birth anniversary of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. The day, also known as Bal Diwas, is dedicated to children and their welfare. Schools and educational institutions across the country organise various programmes, competitions, and cultural activities to make the day enjoyable and meaningful for students.
Why Children’s Day Is Celebrated on November 14
Jawaharlal Nehru was born on November 14, 1889. He was deeply fond of children and strongly believed in their right to education and proper upbringing. His genuine affection earned him the nickname ‘Chacha Nehru’ among children. Nehru often emphasised that the future of the country depends on how well its children are nurtured and educated.
Earlier India observed Universal Children’s Day on 20 November, following the United Nations’ recommendation to promote children’s welfare globally. However, later the Indian government decided to celebrate his birth anniversary as Children’s Day in recognition of his dedication to children’s development and education.

The celebration of Children’s Day in India began in 1957 but was formally declared a national observance after Nehru’s passing. The day serves as a reminder of his vision that every child deserves love, education, and opportunities to grow.
Nehru once said, “The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. The way we bring them up will determine the future of the country.” This thought continues to guide the celebration, which aims to promote awareness about children’s rights and the importance of education in shaping their future.
Children’s Day also encourages society to ensure that children have a safe and nurturing environment, access to health care, and opportunities for learning. It is a day to recognise the role of children as the foundation of a strong and progressive nation.
