Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow (now Dr. Ambedkar Nagar, Madhya Pradesh), came from the Dalit community to become India's foremost advocate for social justice. Despite facing discrimination, he earned multiple degrees abroad and later drafted the Indian Constitution, ensuring rights for marginalised groups. The first recorded celebration of his birth anniversary was organised in 1928 by social reformer Janardan Sadashiv Ranpishe in Pune. In 2015, the Indian government declared the day an official public holiday, cementing its national importance.
