Gujarat experienced its wettest June in the last ten years, with rainfall exceeding 288 mm so far. According to The Indian Express, two low-pressure systems formed over the Arabian Sea between June 17 and 29, and the monsoon trough shifted south of its typical position, leading to rainfall exceeding the average and breaking previous records for June.
As per State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) data, Gujarat recorded 288.7 mm of average rainfall from June 15 to June 30. The recorded rainfall is 32.73 per cent of the total rainfall usually received by the state throughout the rainy season.
Since the onset of the monsoon in the state, South Gujarat region has received the highest rainfall at 532.55 mm, followed by East Central and Saurashtra regions with 245.15 mm and 278.94 mm of rainfall, respectively, NDTV reported.
While Bhavnagar and Botad districts have received more than 50 per cent of the average rainfall so far, five districts—such as Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Devbhumi Dwarka, and Rajkot—have received less than 25 per cent of their average rainfall, the report added.
Last year, August was the wettest month for the state, with 442.23 mm of rainfall. As per the report, at 36.76 mm, Gujarat had recorded its lowest rainfall in June 2016.
In its weather update for the state, the IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places in several districts during the next week.
