A female dancer and her colleagues were violently assaulted at a pre-wedding celebration in Haryana’s Nuh district after she objected to inappropriate behaviour by a male guest, with the entire incident captured in a widely circulated video that has provoked widespread anger.
The attack occurred on November 16 in Pachgaon village during a performance. According to the footage, a man, who is seen holding currency notes, brought his hand uncomfortably close to one of the performers. The dancer responded by slapping his hand away. Offended by her defiance, the man is then seen striking her back, which triggered a chaotic confrontation.
Immediately, several other men stormed the stage, surrounding the dancers. The assailants pushed the primary dancer to the ground and rained blows on her, including strikes with a stick. Two other performers and a man who attempted to shield them were also hit during the melee. The dancers were eventually rescued by frantic members of their own troupe and women from the venue who rushed in to pull them to safety.
Police authorities confirmed they are investigating the incident but stated that a formal case had yet to be registered.
This video has left #Mewat a divided lot.A major brawl broke at a prelude wedding when Groom's uncle tried to molest a dancer and she slapped him. The video’s circulation has ignited a fierce backlash, with many fellow performers speaking out in support of the dancer’s actions and condemning the routine harassment faced by women in their profession.
Another performer, Payal Chaudhary, articulated the grievance felt by many, stating she too had been inappropriately touched by men “showering money.” “First, obscene acts were committed and then they were beaten. If they are raising their voice against the wrong done to them, what is wrong with that?” she questioned, as reported by HT.
Echoing this sentiment, dancer Renu Jangra challenged the stigmatisation of female artists, questioning why they are demeaned for earning a livelihood. She emphasised that the performers were invited guests and that violating their dignity was unacceptable.
Adding to the chorus of support, Nuh dancer Billi defended the artists’ integrity, was cited by HT as saying, “These artists should not be shamed. They are someone’s sisters and daughters and should not be trolled.”
