Two police officers attached to the District East Police Station in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, have been arrested for allegedly raping a 19-year-old girl during a vehicle check near Endal village, The Times of India reported.
According to the police, the woman was travelling in a truck along with two men and her sister on Bypass Road when constables Sunder and Suresh Raj stopped the vehicle for a routine inspection.
The constables took the sisters to a secluded grove nearby and sexually assaulted the younger sibling in front of her elder sister. They abandoned the siblings on the roadside around 4 am on Tuesday and escaped. The workers of a nearby brick kiln unit, on noticing the women on the roadside, alerted the 108 ambulance.
The victim was rushed to the government hospital, where she received medical attention. Doctors informed the police about the incident, leading to a preliminary enquiry and the registration of a case at the District All Women Police Station.
Following the investigation, both constables were arrested and placed under suspension. Senior police officials confirmed that further investigation is ongoing to collect evidence and ensure that strict legal action is taken against the accused.
AIADMK general secretary condemns DMK govt
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) condemned the ruling DMK government over the incident. In a post on X, he described the event as “the horrific pinnacle of women’s insecurity” and accused the government of failing to protect women from crimes committed by law enforcement officials themselves. He said the state had reached a stage where women “must protect themselves from the very police department that is supposed to be their shield.”
EPS demanded that the survivor receive proper medical care and urged authorities to ensure stringent legal action against the two suspended constables.
