A woman from Meghalaya has alleged that she was subjected to racist slurs twice in one day in Delhi, highlighting ongoing discrimination against people from India’s North East. Her video detailing the incidents has gone viral, sparking widespread outrage.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to her post, urging her to report the incidents and expressing concern. “Dear sister, sadly such loony people do exist. Next time, capture their photos and report to Delhi Police NE Cell. The government has created a Special Police Unit to take action against any atrocity or unlawful act against North East people. No one should disrespect people from other states in India. Treat all human beings as equals,” he wrote.

The woman, identified as Rittu Marak, said she was mocked for her appearance and called “Ching Chong” at two separate locations in Delhi, first in Kamla Nagar and later inside a Metro train.

The first incident happened when she was walking past a group of men sitting on a scooter in Kamla Nagar. They shouted offensive remarks at her. “As I turned around, they laughed at me. I didn’t even feel like eating anything after that. I just booked a cab and left,” she said. The humiliation left her shaken and upset.

Just a few hours later, Rittu faced a similar insult inside the Delhi Metro. “Some people were entering the train, and one of the guys again said, ‘Ching Chong China,’ and laughed,” she recalled.

Rittu said the hardest part was being made to feel like an outsider in her own country. “I have been to other countries, but they never made me feel like I didn’t belong there. Today, in my own country, fellow Indians made me feel like I don’t belong here,” she said in the emotional video.

She also shared that she was trying to hold back her tears and cope with the repeated harassment. The video has struck a chord with many, shedding light on the racism and prejudice faced by North East people in other parts of India.
