Just as Telangana was beginning to breathe easy following three days of relentless rainfall, the state may once again be staring at another major weather event as a new warning of heavy showers looms over the state for the coming week.
According to media report, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that a new low-pressure system is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in the coming days, bringing widespread showers across the state.
The IMD–New Delhi said a new low-pressure system is expected to develop around October 1 or 2, triggering widespread rainfall across the state during the first week of October.
The IMD-Hyderabad, in its Sunday bulletin, predicted that light to moderate showers would continue in isolated places between Monday and Wednesday. However, the intensity is likely to increase between October 2 and 4, when heavy rains are expected in several parts of the state.
Govt committed to rejuvenate Musi river: CM Revanth
Chief Minister (CM) A. Revanth Reddy emphasized the urgent need to rejuvenate the Musi River, citing recent floods triggered by intense cloudbursts linked to climate change, according to a repirt by Times Now.
Speaking to residents in Amberpet, he urged communities near the Musi and other water bodies to cooperate in removing encroachments to ensure their safety. The CM inaugurated six sewage treatment plants (STPs) and laid foundations for 39 more, with a total investment exceeding ₹4,300 crore.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable communities, providing rehabilitation, and curbing illegal land sales. Actor Nagarjuna’s N-Convention was highlighted as a successful example of reclaiming encroached land for public use.
Residents advised to avoid peak hour travel
Following recent heavy rains that lashed Hyderabad and several districts, flooding roads, disrupting daily life, and leaving parts of the city waterlogged, authorities have urged residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours.
According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society (TGDPS), the state has received 98.48 cm of rainfall up to September 28, well above the normal average of 73.11 cm, placing Telangana in the “excess rainfall” category and underscoring the severity of this year’s monsoon.
Meteorologists warn that if the low-pressure system strengthens, the region could experience another bout of heavy downpours, raising the risk of localized flooding, particularly in Hyderabad’s low-lying areas. Civic authorities are expected to heighten preparedness measures ahead of the predicted rains.
