The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for ten districts in Telangana for Thursday. In addition, a yellow alert for rain and thunderstorms has been issued for all districts in the state, valid until June 14. For Hyderabad, the yellow alert is in place till June 13, according to a report The Siasat Daily.
Several areas across Telangana experienced intense rain on Wednesday, especially in Nalgonda and Nagarkurnool districts, where it rained heavily for several hours.
According to the IMD’s latest update, heavy rain is expected at isolated locations in the districts of Adilabad, Kumaram Bheem Asifabad, Jagtial, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal. The department has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in various parts of the state.
Rainfall figures released for Wednesday showed Devarakonda in Nalgonda district received the most rain with 76.5 mm, followed by Tripuraram (49.3 mm), Kondamallapally (44.5 mm), Gundlapalle (33 mm), and Damaracherla (30 mm). In Nagarkurnool, the town recorded 47 mm of rain, while Telkapalle saw 44 mm. Meanwhile, Yacharam in neighbouring Rangareddy district received 29 mm, TOI reported.
Authorities have urged people, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone areas, to stay alert. Emergency teams are on standby and closely monitoring the situation.
“Rain-bearing systems have strengthened due to increased moisture and unstable atmospheric conditions. It is advised that people stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open areas when lightning strikes,” IMD Hyderabad meteorologist K S Sridhar was quoted by Newsmeter as saying.
The extended weather forecast suggests that Telangana could continue to experience rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds until at least June 17.
