Tamil Nadu cop on duty shoots himself dead at Madras HC bench premises

A constable from the Tamil Nadu Special Police 6th Battalion, posted on guard duty at the main gate of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, died by suicide early Thursday after shooting himself with his service rifle, The Times of India reported.

Police identified the deceased as M. Manickam, a native of E. Kottaipatti. He had been deployed at the main entrance of the High Court campus at the time of the incident.

Around 3 a.m., Manickam allegedly shot himself in the chest while seated, officials said. He was unmarried and had joined the force two years ago, they added.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, a senior police officer said he left a suicide note stating that no one was responsible for his death and no one should be interrogated.

Meanwhile, High Court police have launched an inquiry to determine the cause of the suicide. The body has been sent to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for post-mortem examination.
