SUV flips as driver opens door at 100 kmph on Chhattisgarh highway to spit gutka, one dead

A 31-year-old cloth merchant was killed and three others severally injured in a road accident on the Bilaspur-Raipur highway early Monday, after the driver of an Innova opened the door to spit gutka while speeding at over 100kmph, causing the vehicle to overturn multiple times, according to a report by The Times of India.

The victim, Jackie Gehi, a businessman from Chakarbhatha, Bilaspur, had attended a late-night party on Sunday. Around 1.30 am, he called his friend Akash Chandani to pick him up. Akash arrived in an Innova, accompanied by another friend, Pankaj Chhabra. Akash was driving, Pankaj sat in the front seat, and Jackie was in the back.

While speeding along the highway, Akash suddenly opened the driver-side door to spit gutkha, losing control of the SUV. The vehicle hit a divider, flipped over several times, and threw all three onto the road. Jackie was flung into a metal structure near the divider, sustaining severe head, chest, and shoulder injuries. He died instantly, the report said.

Akash and Pankaj suffered serious injuries. The vehicle continued to tumble and struck a stationary commercial vehicle before crashing into a parked Ertiga, injuring its driver, who was still inside.

The horrifying accident was caught on CCTV. The footage shows the vehicle flipping down the road, and one of the passengers being ejected and slamming into a pole.

Passersby alerted emergency services, and police reached the spot immediately. The injured were rushed to a hospital while the wreckage was cleared and the area secured. Police are investigating the case and have taken statements from witnesses and survivors where possible.
