Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday subtly criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, suggesting that some individuals have a "habit of crying." He emphasized that central funding to Tamil Nadu has tripled since 2014 compared to previous years.
PM Modi spoke at the gathering following the inauguration of the New Pamban Bridge and the launch of several road infrastructure projects in the state. He stated, “Tamil Nadu is vital to achieving a developed India, or Viksit Bharat. I am confident that as Tamil Nadu unleashes its full potential, the nation’s overall progress will accelerate.”
He emphasized that improving Tamil Nadu’s infrastructure is a key focus for the central government. “Over the last 10 years, the rail budget for the state has increased more than seven times. Yet, despite this remarkable progress, some continue to grumble without reason,” he added.
The Prime Minister highlighted that before 2014, Tamil Nadu’s annual rail allocation was only Rs 900 crore, whereas this year it has exceeded Rs 6,000 crore. He also mentioned that the central government is upgrading 77 railway stations across the state, including the station in Rameswaram. These comments followed accusations from the DMK, Tamil Nadu’s ruling party, that the central government has not provided adequate funds despite the state’s sound financial management.
PM Modi unveils the new Pamban Bridge
Arriving in Rameswaram from Sri Lanka on Sunday, PM Modi launched the New Pamban Bridge, India’s first vertical-lift sea bridge. He also introduced a new train service connecting Rameswaram to Tambaram (Chennai).
“The new rail link between Rameswaram and Chennai, along with connections to other regions, will enhance nationwide connectivity. This will boost trade and tourism in Tamil Nadu while creating new employment and growth opportunities for the state’s youth,” PM Modi stated.
