Six people were killed in two separate accidents during Ganesh immersion processions in Andhra Pradesh, turning festive celebrations into tragedy.
Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has expressed deep sorrow over the incidents and directed officials to provide urgent medical assistance to the injured, NDTV reported.
The most serious accident took place in West Godavari district, where a tractor carrying a Ganesh idol veered out of control in East Talla village of Mogalthuru Mandal.
The vehicle rammed into a group of revellers dancing in the procession, killing four people on the spot and injuring another.
West Godavari District Collector Chadalavada Nagarani, who visited Narsapuram Government Hospital, confirmed the victims as 58-year-old Eevana Suryanarayana, 38-year-old Guruju Murali, 35-year-old Tirumala Narasimhamurthy, and a youth, Kadiyam Dinesh. All were residents of East Talla village, according to NDTV.
Early speculation suggested that the tractor driver, identified as 40-year-old Eevana Raju, had stepped away to drink water when a child attempted to take control of the vehicle. However, district authorities later clarified that it was the driver himself who lost control, leading to the accident.
In a separate incident the same day, two people were killed and six others injured during another Ganesh immersion programme at Chintalaveedi Junction in Paderu, Alluri Sitharama Raju district. Details of the victims have not yet been released, NDTV reported.
Police have opened investigations into both cases and confirmed that the drivers involved have been taken into custody.
The Chief Minister has instructed officials to ensure accountability and take strict action against any negligence linked to the accidents.
