The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a thunderstorm and rainfall warning for the national capital today. The weather unit said that Delhi and the surrounding areas will likely receive pre-monsoon showers on Saturday.
Hindustan Times quoted IMD as saying that Delhi-NCR will have partly cloudy skies with possible thunder and storms on Sunday and Monday. Meanwhile, rainfall and thunderstorms have been predicted for Tuesday (May 27).
This comes two days after the national capital and the surrounding areas experienced gusty winds and a strong dust storm with winds reaching up to 76 km per hour. Loss of property and trees was reported from several areas.
The dust storm that hit Delhi-NCR on Wednesday evening also affected the Metro services in the capital.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) issued a statement confirming that strong winds and external debris had damaged Overhead Equipment (OHE) in some sections, leading to disruption on the Red, Yellow and Pink Lines.
Meanwhile, flights at the IGI Airport were also affected - with many of them cancelled and many others delayed.
The intense weather disrupted normal life across Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and neighbouring areas. Several parts of Noida and Greater Noida reported power outages and falling debris as gusty winds wreaked havoc. Visuals shared online showed trees uprooted, signboards and electric poles toppled and widespread waterlogging.
In Greater Noida West, the storm also damaged a shuttering structure from an under-construction CRC project near Galaxy Vega, crushing several parked cars in an open parking area. An X user also shared that the main gate of the Apex Golf Avenue society in Greater Noida West crashed down due to the intense wind and rain.
Around 4 people were reported dead due to extreme weather conditions across Delhi-NCR. In another society in Greater Noida, a balcony door was broken due to the winds. However, no harm to the residents was reported.
