PM Modi was accompanied by Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Devendra Fadnavis for the inauguration. The first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), built at a cost of around Rs 19,650 crore.
The newly launched airport is expected to eventually handle 90 million passengers annually (MPPA) and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo, reported PTI. Situated in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, around 37 km from South Mumbai, NMIA spans 1,160 hectares and is being developed as a greenfield airport under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.

The facility also boasts a 3,700-metre runway capable of accommodating large aircraft such as the Airbus A380. Future expansion plans include three additional terminals and a parallel runway, ultimately increasing total passenger capacity to 90 million and cargo handling to 3.25 million metric tonnes per year.
The terminal’s architecture draws inspiration from the lotus flower. The structure features 12 sculptural columns resembling unfolding petals and 17 mega-columns supporting the vast roof canopy — all engineered to withstand seismic activity, strong winds, and heavy loads.
A key highlight of NMIA is its Automated People Mover (APM) — an internal transit system connecting all four passenger terminals. A separate landside APM will link terminals with city-side infrastructure.
