Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) legislator Bhai Virendra, who represents the Maner constituency, has found himself at the centre of a heated controversy after an audio recording, purportedly of him threatening a panchayat secretary, surfaced on July 27 and quickly spread across online platforms.
As covered by TOI, the exchange, triggered by a request about a death certificate, escalated into heated threats, with Bhai Virendra allegedly questioning the official’s adherence to protocol, asserting, “The whole country knows me. How dare you not follow proper protocol?”
When the panchayat secretary replied that the MLA’s voice was unfamiliar to him, the conversation escalated sharply. Bhai Virendra allegedly responded, “I’ll drag you and beat you with a shoe. Record it if you want.” The official, unperturbed, stated, “Get me transfer but don't talk to me like this,” to which the MLA retorted, “This won't stop at transfer, something else might happen,” a remark many have read as a thinly veiled death threat.
Despite the mounting pressure, the panchayat secretary remained resolute in the audio. He is heard telling the MLA, “I’m not afraid of your threats. Let’s stick to work.”
The authenticity of the recording has not been confirmed, as noted by TOI, but its circulation has ignited fervent discussion online, with many social media users weighing in on the incident and the tone of political discourse.
This isn’t the first time Bhai Virendra has courted controversy. Days before the current audio incident, the MLA triggered uproar in the Bihar Assembly. During a charged session, he reportedly declared, “the House is nobody’s property,” defying demands for an apology and standing his ground as ministers accused him of stoking “Gunda Raaj”. The tension in the assembly was reportedly so pronounced that opposition leaders demanded his removal from legislative duties for refusing to retract his statements.
The spat between Bhai Virendra and the panchayat secretary has also drawn sharp parallels with scenes from the popular web series “Panchayat”, where friction between local politicians and village officials is a recurring theme. Social media users have posted clips, memes and strong opinions on X, further propelling the story into the national spotlight.
