Amid a nationwide crackdown on Pakistani nationals overstaying illegally in India, a Pakistani woman, Shumaila Khan, 43, accused of securing a teaching position using forged documents, has been on the run for the past three months, police said.
According to the police, Shumaila used a fake domicile certificate from Rampur to get a job in Uttar Pradesh's basic education department. An FIR was registered against her on January 14 under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to cheating, impersonation, forgery of valuable securities, and using forged documents as genuine.
Shumaila was recently tracked to Rampur, but she evaded arrest before the police could apprehend her, TOI reported. She was last traced to Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, nearly three months ago. Despite multiple raids, her whereabouts remain unknown.
District Magistrate Avinash Singh has sought detailed reports from the basic education department and local police. Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Sanjay Singh said that an investigation by the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) in October last year revealed that Shumaila’s parents were Pakistani citizens.
"Investigation by the local intelligence unit (LIU) in October last year revealed that Khan's parents hold Pakistani citizenship. Following this, she was suspended and later dismissed from service. We have initiated the process of recovering her salary,” Singh said.
Shumaila had been employed as a teacher at a school in Madhopur, located in Bareilly’s Fatehganj West area. Her mother, Mahira Akhtar, also known as Farzana, was previously dismissed from government service in 2015.
Mahira had been employed as a government teacher in Saidnagar block, Rampur, since 1992. According to the report, Mahira married a Pakistani national in 1979, divorced two years later, and subsequently returned to India, where she remarried.
The police officials added that Shumaila completed her schooling in Rampur and pursued a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree from Meerganj in Bareilly. It is alleged that she obtained a fraudulent domicile certificate from the office of the Rampur Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) to gain employment.
