An FIR registered at Ganeshpeth Police Station in connection with the Nagpur violence reveals that an accused inappropriately touched the uniform and body of an on-duty woman police officer from the RCP squad during the incident, ANI reported.

The accused further made obscene gestures and behaved improperly with a few women police personnel.

A senior police official told PTI that the law and order situation in Nagpur – which was shaken by violence on the night of March 17 – is under control. However, curfew restrictions remain in certain sensitive areas of the city.

Another official said that more than 2,000 armed police personnel have been deployed in the sensitive areas. Similarly, the QRT (quick response team) and RCP (riot control police) are conducting patrolling led by a DCP-rank officer, he said.

Violence erupted in Chitnis Park of Nagpur’s Mahal area on Monday amid rumours that a community’s holy book was burned during a right-wing group’s protest demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Stone-pelting occurred during the unrest, resulting in injuries to 34 police personnel.

A curfew, restricting the movement of people and vehicles, was subsequently imposed in sensitive areas in the city.

According to the city police, the curfew is now in force in areas under the jurisdiction of the Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shant Nagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imambada, Yashodhara Nagar and Kapil Nagar police station.

So far, around 50 people have been arrested in connection with the stone-pelting and arson.

Reacting to the incident, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said that it looks like a “well-planned attack”. He said that rumours were spread that things containing religious content were burnt.

"The Chhava movie has ignited people's anger against Aurangzeb, but still, everyone must keep Maharashtra peaceful. Law and order should be maintained. If anyone riots, we will take action regardless of caste or religion," he said.
