Durgapur gang-rape case

West Bengal Police on Sunday arrested three men in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 23-year-old MBBS student outside her college campus in Durgapur on Friday night.

The three arrested have been identified as Apu Bauri (21), Firdos Sekh (23), and Sekh Reajuddin (31). The male friend accompanying the survivor is also under the scanner, police sources were quoted by NDTV as saying.

The woman is undergoing treatment at a hospital. The victim’s father told reporters, "She is unable to walk and is on bedrest. The Chief Minister, DG, SP, and Collector are all helping us a lot and regularly enquiring about her health... I have requested the Chief Minister to let us take my daughter away from here to Odisha, to a safer place because here, her safety is at risk. We have requested her to let us take her away."

The woman's father said Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi has reached out to him. "The Odisha Chief Minister has spoken to me. The administration is helping us," he said, adding that he has requested that his daughter be given admission in an Odisha medical college.

The incident has sparked political tensions between the ruling Trinamool Congress and opposition parties, with Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi urging West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee to guarantee prompt justice. As per the complaint, the assault occurred between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm, approximately 1.5 km from the college campus.

As per the report, college authorities said both students had left campus around 7.58 pm and returned at 9.29 pm on Friday.

“Later it came to light that while outside the campus, the female student endured an assault, an occurrence she herself claimed and reported,” a college note was quoted as saying.

The victim’s father said, “It was a mistake to send my daughter here to study MBBS. This incident has caused her extreme mental and physical trauma. Students have begun a sit-in on campus, demanding an impartial investigation.
