In its latest weather update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, forecasting heavy rainfall, cloudy skies, and potential urban flooding through the first week of July.
With monsoon tightening its grip over the city, civic agencies are preparing for potential traffic disruptions in low-lying and high-traffic areas, Urban Acres reported.
The IMD has indicated a significant increase in monsoon rainfall intensity, coupled with concerns about uneven rainfall distribution, according to weather experts. As per the report, while Colaba observatory exceeded its average June rainfall with 592 mm, the Santacruz station fell slightly short at 512.7 mm.
Meanwhile, today’s heavy rain is expected to ease marginally from Thursday onwards, with moderate rainfall predicted daily until July 7. However, weather officials, as per the report, have caution that the strengthening offshore troughs over the Arabian Sea and cyclonic circulations may produce sudden high-intensity bursts of rain through the week.
July 3 was to experience the heaviest rain, as per the district-level forecast. On Thursday, the day temperatures are expected to reach 30°C and night temperatures dipping to around 26°C.
While the IMD has not issued fresh alerts beyond Wednesday, the persistent cloud cover and prevailing wind conditions suggest that the city is likely to remain under monsoonal influence, the report added.
