Mumbai experienced a notably brisk start to the day on Tuesday, with the minimum temperature plunging to 16.9 degrees Celsius, sending a chill through the city accustomed to milder winter nights.

According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cool conditions are, however, set to be swiftly overtaken by significant daytime warmth, with the mercury expected to climb to a high of around 34 degrees Celsius by the afternoon. IMD has issued a dry weather alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar until Friday.

This stark intraday temperature swing highlights a recent pattern where the city has narrowly avoided the colder waves that have gripped other parts of Maharashtra in recent weeks. While suburbs like Santacruz and Powai recorded the 16.9 degrees Celsius low, the IMD forecast indicates a week of stable, dry weather ahead, with clear skies and no warnings issued.

Air quality presents a mixed picture

Alongside the thermal contrast, the city’s air quality presented a divergent narrative. Official monitoring data placed the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) at 111 on Tuesday morning, categorising it as ‘moderate’. In this range, sensitive individuals may experience minor respiratory discomfort.

However, the broader figure masks more severe localised pollution. As reported, specific hotspots within the metropolis saw the AQI cross the 200 mark, reaching up to 224, which falls into the ‘poor’ category. This patchwork of air quality suggests variable conditions across different neighbourhoods.

A week of consistent, clear weather forecast

The IMD’s extended outlook promises consistent weather for Mumbai. The forecast indicates a repeated pattern of warm, clear days and mildly cool nights for the remainder of the week.

Each day is expected to mirror the next, characterised by entirely clear skies and a stable, dry atmosphere. The daytime will bring significant warmth, with maximum temperatures holding steady at 34 degrees Celsius from Monday through Thursday, before dipping slightly to 33 degrees Celsius for Friday and Saturday.

Nights will remain mildly cool, with minimum temperatures hovering between 18 and 19 degrees Celsius for the first half of the week and dropping a notch to around 17 degrees Celsius towards the weekend. Notably, the IMD has issued no weather warnings for this entire period, indicating no anticipated rainfall, cold waves or other significant disturbances.
