Mumbai and its metropolitan regions are bracing for intense weather conditions, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Mumbai and Thane under an orange alert for Friday and Raigad under a red alert for extreme heavy rainfall, The Free Press Journal reported.
In its weather forecast, the weather department had also issued a weather warning on Wednesday for an increase in heavy rainfall activity across Maharashtra. According to the report, the other districts placed under orange and red alerts are Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg; the ghats of Pune, Satara, and Kolhapur; and several districts in the Vidharbha region.
Meanwhile, according to the local weather forecast for Mumbai city and suburbs for the next 24 hours, the skies will be generally cloudy with moderate rain and possibility of heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places towards night/early morning, the report added. The maximum & minimum temperatures will be around 31°C and 24°C, respectively.
Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has also issued a warning for high tides for the next three days. According to the report, the highest tide is expected on Saturday at 1:20 pm, with a height of 4.67 meters above sea level.
The FPJ noted that Nariman Point (26 mm), CSMT (21 mm), Mankhurd (28 mm), Mulund (21 mm), Sewri (18 mm), Chakala (17 mm), Chembur (16 mm), and Aarey Road (14 mm) are among some of the areas that received the highest rainfall on Thursday.
Lake levels in city’s water reservoirs reach 87%
The water levels in lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai have risen following heavy rainfall in their catchment areas. According to the report, the combined stock in the seven reservoirs that provide water to the city now stands at 87%. On the same day last year, the water stock was 58% and in 2023 was 53%.
Moreover, two out of seven dams-- Modak Sagar and Tansa--supplying water to Mumbai have started overflowing. While earlier this month, two gates of Middle Vaitarna were opened and water release from Upper Vaitarna was started, the report added.
