In a move to reduce traffic congestion on one of Mumbai’s busiest roads, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started work on the 13.9-km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension. The fully elevated, six-lane road is expected to shorten travel time between South Mumbai and Thane, bringing it down to around 25 to 30 minutes once completed.

The new elevated corridor will begin at Anand Nagar in Thane and end at Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar. Along the way, it will connect key areas like Mulund, Airoli, JVLR, Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg, Mankhurd and Ghatkopar, making travel across the eastern suburbs faster and smoother.

At the Thane end, the road will link with the Anand Nagar-Saket elevated road near the old Mulund Octroi Naka, creating a continuous route that will also offer access to the Samruddhi Expressway.

A special construction method is being used for the first time in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The elevated road will be supported by a single-pile, single-pier system, using 2.5-metre monopiles and 40-metre spans, along with a 25-metre single-segment structure above.

To improve entry and exit, ramps will be built at Mulund Check Naka, Airoli Junction and Vikhroli Junction. A 3+3 lane elevated toll plaza is also planned near the Navghar Flyover.

MMRDA has made changes to the route between Vikhroli and Ghatkopar to protect the environment and save 127 Pink Trumpet trees. In addition, the agency has committed to planting 4,175 new trees as part of its compensatory afforestation plan.

Authorities said the extension is expected to ease daily pressure on the Eastern Express Highway, reduce emissions and improve overall connectivity across the region.
