The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is expected to begin construction on a ₹418-crore cable-stayed bridge connecting Goregaon and Andheri’s Oshiwara in November, with a target completion date of October 2028. The 542-meter bridge will cross the Goregaon Creek to ease traffic congestion on SV Road and Link Road.
The project will provide a new north-south corridor parallel to the existing route and will eventually connect to the proposed Mumbai Coastal Road (North), according to The Indian Express.
The route
The new bridge will span Goregaon Creek along a 36.6-metre-wide DP Road, and connect the Link Road with two congested areas — Bhagat Singh Nagar in Goregaon and Oshiwara in Andheri. As per the report, the cable-stayed span will cover 238 metres.
The bridge will be 28.55 metres wide, featuring six lanes— three carriageways on each side. Apart from the main carriageways, the bridge is proposed to comprise a 0.45 metre median as well as a 1.5 m-wide utility corridor along each carriageway.
As per the report, it will serve as a vital connector for commuters between Andheri, Oshiwara, Lokhandwala, and Goregaon, and provide an additional access route to Bhagat Singh Nagar.
Approved in 2022, what’s holding up Goregaon-Andheri bridge
According to BMC records, the cable-stayed bridge was approved at the end of 2022. However, the bridge project encountered a lengthy approval process. Its path through sensitive environmental areas necessitated numerous clearances. Permissions were awaited from the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA), the forest department, and the high court.
The MCZMA granted approval in May 2023, subject to certain conditions. It directed the BMC to adhere to the CRZ Notification, 2019, and build the bridge on stilts to minimize its environmental impact on the mangroves.
The authority further cautioned that the bridge’s construction must not obstruct local fishing activities, disturb the creek’s natural water flow, or result in the dumping of solid waste into the creek.
In 2024, the BMC sought the HC’s permission adhering to a 2018 HC order that necessitated judicial permission for building in mangrove and buffer zones. The BMC said 31 mangroves would need to be cut down, proposing to plant 444 new ones as compensation.
In May 2025, the court granted its approval, deeming the bridge a matter of public interest.
