After a four-year gap, Mumbai's beloved mini train, fondly known as "Van Rani" is all set to return to the tracks of Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP), by the end of September.

The iconic mini toy train, which was one of the park’s most popular attractions since its launch in 1970, which was discontinued after Cyclone Tauktae caused severe damage in 2021.

New look 'Van Rani' toy train with vistadome coaches

Now, the Van Rani is being brought back, refreshed, revitalised, and ready to roll. This time, the forest department is introducing a new, battery-operated toy train with four vistadome coaches, that will allow tourists to enjoy panoramic views of the lush park landscape.

The previous version of the train, which was powered by a diesel locomotive, had three coaches and could accommodate 70 to 80 passengers. With the upgrade, capacity is expected to rise. Officials confirmed that the train successfully completed its technical verification and a passenger trial run in July this year.

“The majority of the work is complete, and we hope to resume services by the end of this month,” said an official from the Maharashtra Forest Department as quoted by Mid-day.

According to the report quoting sources, an investment of over ₹43 crore was made to acquire the new train and carrying out civil works. The Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) handled the infrastructure development for the project.

The launch of Mumbai's "Van Rani" toy train was delayed beyond the initial hopes of late 2024, and then again from a July-August target due to pending works. Park officials are now confident that the project will now meet its new deadline.

Route, new attractions

The 2.7-km narrow-gauge route runs through the Krishnagiri Upavan area, where visitors can also see a mini-zoo. The new Van Rani will offer more than just a ride. Passengers can enjoy educational panels on wildlife, panoramic views of the Deer Park, and an immersive journey through SGNP's rich biodiversity, adding a fresh dimension to the experience.
