The Punjab police constable, who was caught with heroin in her black Thar SUV, had posted a video of her in uniform on Instagram a day before her arrest, an act which violates the departmental orders that prohibit personnel from “modelling” on social media.

Amandeep Kaur, arrested on April 2 under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act with 17.71 grams of heroin, was dismissed from service the following day. Her arrest came amid the Punjab government’s intensified anti-drug campaign, Yudh Nasheyan De Virudh.

A day prior to her arrest, the constable, known as ‘police_kaurdeep’ on social media, shared a reel in her uniform, flouting a 2022 directive by Punjab’s Director General of Police. The directive had instructed police personnel to refrain from using the uniform for publicity or social media influence.

Kaur’s Instagram profile, which had around 30,000 followers before her arrest, now boasts over 90,000. Her content often features luxury items, branded handbags, designer sunglasses, and high-end watches. Her black Thar SUV appears prominently in several videos, often alongside popular Punjabi music.

In one controversial reel, she lip-syncs lyrics of a Punjabi song, which reads: “Tu aankhen tal ja ni kiddan taliye, puthe kamaan vich taan police rali ai...” (You ask me to stop doing wrong things, but how can I stop when the police itself back us in such wrongdoings).

Despite the departmental ban, Kaur continued to post such content. The Punjab Police had issued the ban after the Punjab and Haryana High Court took note of the growing trend of officers posting videos in uniform.

In a letter dated May 22, 2022, the Punjab Additional Secretary (Home) had written to the DGP’s office instructing police officials to refrain from using the uniform for personal publicity. “Police officials are to be further instructed to desist from bringing disrepute and insult to the uniform by ‘modelling in uniform’ for publicity and by publishing objectionable pictures on their social media accounts and other such forms. In view of the above, it is requested to inform and direct the offices under your command to comply with the instructions meticulously. If any official is found violating the instructions, action will be initiated as per relevant rules,” the letter read.
