A 5-year-old girl was found murdered with her throat slit in the bathroom of an abandoned house near her home in Adarsh Nagar, Jagtial district, Telangana, on Saturday, The Times of India reported.
According to the report, the girl had gone missing while playing outside on July 5. The victim's aunt is considered the prime suspect in the murder case, police were quoted by TOI as saying. The suspect's husband is the younger brother of the victim's father, A Ramulu. Ramulu and his brother recently went to the Gulf in search of work.
After the child went missing, the family approached the local police. As per the report, after interrogating various people in the locality, including a few children, the police officers entered the abandoned house and found the child's body in the bathroom.
"The house has no gate or door and was in a state of abandonment. One can mostly enter the compound unrestricted. The owner, Vijay, visits the house occasionally," the police were quoted by TOI as saying. The police added that when the murder took place, Vijay was reportedly in Warangal.
His family members were also not at the house at the time of the incident. After confirming this, the police started speaking to various witnesses at the scene, including the victim's family members, the report added.
As per the report, inconsistencies were found in the answers given by the sister of the victim's mother during questioning. After she was taken into custody and interrogated, she reportedly confessed to killing the girl by slitting her throat.
"It was due to differences with the victim's mother, Naveena, and jealousy," police added. As per the report, the suspect was not arrested till Sunday evening as she was still being questioned by the police. The suspect also took a few precautionary measures by screening evidence, but police have yet to disclose the details.
