A 24-year-old Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) student allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Mumbai, leaving behind a detailed six-page note that has led to the arrest of her boyfriend on charges of abetment.
The deceased, identified as Stuti Sonawane, was found hanging in her home in the Antop Hill area on Monday morning. Later that day, police apprehended her boyfriend, Fazal Mohammad Khan (31), an insurance agent, from Lower Parel.
According to officials from the Antop Hill police station cited by TOI, the six-page suicide note recovered from the scene forms the cornerstone of the investigation. In it, Sonawane allegedly detailed the emotional distress and mental trauma she endured during their one-and-a-half-year relationship.
The note reveals that the duo met on a dating app and eventually became friends before entering a relationship. The couple had reportedly decided to part ways amicably some time ago. Over the course of time, the duo reportedly realised their relationship would not last and that due to various reasons they could not proceed, leading them to break off and remain just friends.
According to the report, investigators have discovered a scuffle broke out between Khan and another man who entered Sonawane's life following the break-up. The official added that in a fit of rage following this altercation, Khan allegedly used derogatory language against the woman. The student explicitly mentioned these insults in her suicide note, stating that they caused her severe mental trauma.
The note also shed light on the fact that Sonawane's friends were acutely aware of the turmoil in her relationship. According to reports, the police said she recounted in her writings that her friends would often express their concern through a darkly prescient joke, telling her they did not want to see her in the fridge.
The tragic incident came to light around 11 am on Monday when Sonawane failed to emerge from her room. After her calls went unanswered, her parents broke open the door and found her hanging from the ceiling. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead upon arrival.
Based on the contents of the suicide note, in which she explicitly named Khan and a formal complaint lodged by her parents, the Antop Hill police registered a case. Khan, a resident of Worli, has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 108 (abetment of suicide). Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
