A youth suffered a bullet injury in his leg when police opened fire in self-defence as a mob allegedly attempted to free an ATM robbery accused from a Meghalaya Police team near Sikrawa village in Haryana’s Nuh district on Tuesday evening, a TOI report stated.

The injured youth, Tareef Khan, a resident of Sikrawa village, has been admitted to Pt Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak, where his condition is stable, the report quoted officials as saying.

Nuh additional superintendent of police Ayush Yadav told reporters that the incident unfolded when a Meghalaya Police team was transporting Rahul Khan, a resident of Wajidpur in Nuh, to Meghalaya on transit remand for an ATM robbery case.

The TOI report detailed that upon reaching Sikrawa village near HR-93 Donga Hotel in the Pinangwan police station area, the accused insisted the vehicle be stopped. He suddenly grabbed the steering wheel and tried to overturn it in a bid to escape custody, Yadav explained.

A crowd of 20-30 people, including women, quickly gathered, surrounded the vehicle and allegedly tried to snatch the car keys and seize weapons from the police team, the report stated. As tensions escalated, the police fired shots in self-defence to disperse the mob.

Police have registered a case against 12 named individuals — Naseem, Farookh, Maimuna, Sahruni, Mustakeem, Sahid, Khuddi, Khalid, Bhuppat, Zafar, Tareef Khan and Rahul — along with several others, for attacking the team, obstructing government duty and attempting to free the accused, according to the complaint filed by Meghalaya Police sub-inspector Arkidalang Wahlang.

A Pinangwan police station team rushed to the spot after receiving information, recovering two empty cartridges, blood samples and blood-stained clothing. A forensic science team also inspected the scene and collected evidence, the TOI report added.

Rahul Khan is wanted in multiple ATM cutting cases at Dwarka and Dabri police stations in Delhi, as well as by Meghalaya's Special Cell. He is also suspected of involvement in similar ATM thefts in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, as per the report. Special teams have been formed to arrest the named accused, with raids underway.
