A potential disaster was narrowly avoided on Thursday morning when a coach of the Shalimar–Sambalpur Mahima Gosain Express derailed near Sambalpur City Station in Odisha. No casualties or injuries were reported, officials confirmed.
The incident reportedly occurred at around 9.22 am, just four minutes after the train departed Sambalpur City station, according to railway sources cited by TNIE. The derailment took place between Sambalpur City and Sambalpur Junction while the train was moving at a very slow speed. The affected coach was the rear trolley of a general compartment, located next to the guard van.
“There has been no loss of life or property. All passengers are safe” the East Coast Railway spokesperson confirmed, as reported by TNIE.

Authorities acted swiftly, detaching the derailed coach and allowing the rest of the train to proceed to Sambalpur with all passengers on board. The guard of the train noted that the slow speed of the locomotive helped prevent a more serious accident.
Senior officials, including the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), have reportedly rushed to the site to oversee restoration efforts. Local police and district administration teams were also present. An inquiry has been initiated to determine the cause of the derailment.
