A man and his wife were arrested in Punjab’s Ludhiana on Wednesday for allegedly beating his 85-year-old mother after the assault was caught on CCTV and noticed by his sister, residing in Australia.

Gurnam Kaur had been living with her son Jasveer Singh and daughter-in-law Gurpreet Kaur in Mohalla Bank Colony, Raikot, Ludhiana. The family had installed CCTVs in the house for security purposes. On April 1, while checking the home’s CCTV footage, her daughter in Australia saw her old mother being physically abused.

Distressed by the incident, she reached out to Gurpreet Singh, Chairman of Humanity Services, who immediately visited the house and took Gurnam Kaur to a local government hospital for medical treatment.

The CCTV footage dated March 28 shows Gurnam Kaur, who is sitting on a cot, being slapped multiple times by her son. He is also seen trying to strangle her. When she nearly loses consciousness, the purported video shows him dragging her on the floor.

Raikot City SHO Amarjit Singh informed that police initiate an investigation after receiving a medical report detailing the elderly woman's injuries. ASI Gurmeet Singh recorded her statement, in which she revealed that she had been facing abuse for an extended period by her son and daughter-in-law.

Based on her statement, police arrested Jasveer and Gurpreet under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation.

Initially, the couple confessed to the abuse but later tried to justify their actions. A video of the assault quickly circulated on social media, prompting the Punjab State Women Commission to take suo motu cognizance of the matter.
