All educational institutions in Meerut and Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh will remain closed from July 16 to July 23 in view of the kanwar yatra, district authorities said on Tuesday.
In Meerut, District Magistrate VK Singh issued an official order declaring a temporary closure of all schools. He stated, “Due to the heavy movement of Kanwariyas during this time, we must take steps to protect students and maintain smooth traffic flow. All schools will remain shut to prevent disruptions and ensure safety.” Schools are expected to reopen on July 24, The Times of India reported.
Muzaffarnagar district authorities have issued a similar order. District Magistrate Umesh Mishra confirmed that all educational institutions, including government and private schools, primary and secondary schools, degree colleges, and technical institutes, will remain closed during this period. District Inspector of Schools (DIOS) Rajesh Kumar added that all institutions, including those affiliated with the UP Board, CBSE, and ICSE, have been informed. “Any school found operating during this time will face strict action,” Hindustan Times quoted Mishra as saying.
In addition to Meerut and Muzaffarnagar, the Bareilly administration has announced school holidays on all four Mondays of the Sawan month. This includes all CBSE, ICSE, UP Board, and technical/vocational institutions located within a 5-kilometre radius of Delhi Road and Badaun Road.
Meanwhile, in Badaun, the district administration has decided that primary schools (classes 1 to 8) will remain closed every Saturday and Monday throughout the Sawan month.
The Kanwar Yatra has also raised concerns over law and order. Reports of vandalism by Kanwariyas have surfaced from Haridwar, Ghaziabad, Meerut, and Muzaffarnagar, prompting authorities to increase security along major routes. Additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents, according to the HT report.
