The Navi Mumbai police have arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly murdering a 35-year-old man whose wife had rejected his marriage proposal. The victim has been identified as Abubakar Mandal, a resident of Vashi Gaon in Navi Mumbai. The accused, Aminur Ali Maulla, had allegedly developed one-sided romantic feelings for Mandal’s wife, Fatima, aged 25, The Indian Express reported.
According to the police, Aminur had been trying to get close to Fatima for some time and had recently proposed marriage to her. However, Fatima refused his proposal, making it clear that she was already married. This rejection is believed to have enraged Aminur and led him to take the drastic step.
On Monday, when Abubakar did not return home from work and could not be reached on his phone, Fatima approached the Vashi police station to file a missing person’s report, according to the IE report. During her statement, she mentioned that Aminur had proposed to her recently and was pressuring her to accept. This information led police to consider Aminur as a prime suspect in the case.
As the investigation progressed, the police found Mandal’s body in the Vashi creek on Tuesday. Based on the complaint, they believe that Aminur murdered Fatima’s husband to eliminate the obstacle in his way and threw the body into the creek. He also tried to destroy evidence by dumping his clothes and other belongings into a nearby nullah near the Panvel-Sion Road.
The police arrested Aminur shortly after and confirmed the body’s identity before sending it for post-mortem examination at a government hospital. Officials believe the crime was driven by a combination of personal anger and unreturned romantic interest. “The woman was allegedly under pressure from the accused to marry him. Her refusal might have triggered this act of violence,” news agency PTI quoted a police official as saying.
