The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Jammu and Kashmir, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall between 7 and 20 cm today with the possibility of isolated extremely heavy showers exceeding 20 cm.
Officials said a red nowcast warning remains valid for the next two hours, predicting intense downpours of more than 15 mm per hour accompanied by thunderstorms across most districts of Jammu and Kashmir, along with parts of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
In another update, the IMD said that the latest radar imagery from Delhi shows intense convection building over the western parts of the capital and adjoining districts of Haryana. A red nowcast warning for heavy rain—greater than 15 mm per hour—has already been issued for these areas.
Authorities have urged residents, especially in flood-prone and low-lying regions, to remain vigilant and avoid venturing near swollen rivers and water bodies as the weather system continues to intensify.
