Mumbai has been placed on high alert following a surge in Indo-Pak tensions, prompting sweeping security measures across Maharashtra. The Indian Navy and Mumbai Police are ramping up surveillance efforts, particularly along the coastline, amid growing concerns over potential infiltration attempts.
According to a report by ABP Majha, the alert status comes in the wake of Pakistani attempts to launch drone, missile and fighter aircraft attacks on Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Punjab. India's air defence systems, including the S-400, were reportedly activated to intercept the threats.
According to a TimesNow report, the Indian Navy held an important meeting with fishermen in Mumbai to bolster coastal vigilance, especially amid fears that fishing boats could be misused for terror activities - a tactic reminiscent of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
Fishermen were strictly instructed not to enter sensitive maritime zones identified by naval authorities. Officials at the meeting emphasised the crucial role of the fishing community in safeguarding the coastline and urged full cooperation in maintaining maritime security.
As part of enhanced surveillance measures, a comprehensive survey of all fishing boats in Mumbai will soon be conducted, with vessel data to be collected digitally via a newly introduced mobile app. The initiative aims to enable real-time tracking and better monitoring of boats, significantly improving the ability of authorities to detect anomalies and prevent misuse, as per the TimeNow report.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Police have been directed to heighten security across key public and religious sites, railway stations and tourist hotspots, ABP Majha reported. Special attention is being paid to high-footfall areas and locations with prior records of unrest.
Mumbai Police have also cancelled all new leave applications to ensure maximum deployment during this critical period. While officers already on leave haven’t been recalled, all personnel have been put on standby, prepared for immediate mobilisation if required.
